UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE RESEARCH STUDIES (5)
STUDY TYPE: Women’s Health POSTED: 12/22/2021

Impact of Estrogen on Vascular Function in Women

CONDUCTED BY: College of Health Sciences, Kinesiology and Applied Physiology Dept, Women’s Cardiovascular Research Lab
STUDY SPONSOR: American Heart Association
LOCATION: STAR Campus  |  BEGINNING: 12/22/2021
STUDY CONTACT: Megan Wenner  |   EMAIL: mwenner@udel.edu

DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this study is to learn more about blood vessel function in women. With advancing age, blood vessel function declines and cardiovascular disease risk increases. A reduction in estrogen with age may contribute to the decline in blood vessel function. We are interested in understanding how changes in estrogen can impact the mechanisms that regulate blood vessel function. We are recruiting young and postmenopausal women for this study. Women will undergo a short duration hormone intervention, and have blood vessel function assessed at baseline and after 7 days of estrogen exposure.

BENEFITS:

Not available at this time.

INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION CRITERIA:

Each of our studies has criteria for participating. These criteria help to preserve the scientific rigor by reducing the number of variables in our study. Each study has its unique criteria which are listed on its respective page.

SCHEDULING:

We understand that our study visits are long and sometimes inconvenient for those who work a 9-5 job. We do our best to work around your schedule as we value your participation in our studies. Typically our study visits start in the morning, as early as 7am, and our latest visit can start at 3pm, Monday through Friday. We do not currently have study visits on the weekend.

SAFETY:

We do everything we can to ensure your safety and comfort during the study visit. The techniques we use are validated by other researchers and have been used on many people without incident. Our protocols are evaluated by the University of Delaware Institutional Review Board to ensure participant safety and minimize risks. We also have trained staff who routinely conduct these procedures and have protocols in place in the event anything were to happen. Our studies do involve needles, such as for a blood draw, if you are uncomfortable with needles our studies may not be a good fit for you.

STUDY TYPE: Women’s Health POSTED: 12/22/2021

Mechanisms contributing to hypertension in postmenopausal women

CONDUCTED BY: College of Health Sciences, Kinesiology and Applied Physiology Dept, Women’s Cardiovascular Research Lab
STUDY SPONSOR: National Institutes of Health
LOCATION: STAR Campus  |  BEGINNING: 12/22/2021
STUDY CONTACT: Megan Wenner  |   EMAIL: mwenner@udel.edu

DESCRIPTION:

The prevalence of hypertension increases in women after menopause. Data in pre-clinical animal models indicates that females may need alternate forms of therapy to lower blood pressure. One way blood pressure can be lowered is by reducing the amount of constriction of the blood vessels. Endothelin-1 is a potent vasoconstriction that has been implicated in the development of hypertension. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of ET-1 in contributing to hypertension in postmenopausal women, and how this substance interacts with other common constricting agents involved in hypertension.

BENEFITS:

There are no benefits at this time.
